When a citizen of India turns eighteen years of age, they become eligible for voting. A Voter card is a photo identity card issued by the Election Commission of India. The Voter ID’s function is to serve as an identity proof of voters, increase efficiency, and prevent fraudulent behavior during a free and fair democratic election. The Voter ID card is also known as Electors Photo Identity Card, election card, or voter’s card.

Uses of a Voter’s ID

The Voter ID card is primarily uses for identification during the casting of a vote by an Indian citizen. It also serves as a govt-issued identification proof for the holder.

A Voter card can be used for instances that require address proof as well. The Voter card is required in the case that the individual needs to update their address or for reinstatement in the case that they have been stricken off the Voting List.

The Voter ID can also be used as identification to purchase international tickets in the case the individual is awaiting their passport. The Voter ID can also be used to avail of certain govt schemes.

How to vote without Voter ID card?

To be eligible to vote in India, a person has to register himself or herself as a registered voter card. The person can either registered for the same offline or can visit the election commission website and get register there. If the person is already a registered voter, then he or she can vote without the voter card. The following lists of documents are accepted in case the person does not have his/ her voter ID card:

• Passport
•  Driving license 
• Service Identity Cards with photographs issued to employees by Central, State Government Public Sector Undertakings, Public Limited Companies.
• Passbooks with Photograph issued by Bank or Post Office
• PAN card
• Aadhar card
• Smart Card issued by Registrar General of India under the National Population Register
• Pension order with a photo
• Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act Job Card
• Health Insurance Smart Card issued under the scheme of the Ministry of Labor

Fake or Defunct Voter ID cards:

Like any other document, fake/defunct Voter cards are also quite prevalent in India. These cards have little / no reliability and cannot be used by an individual to cast a vote. These cards are often misused for other purposes where personal identification is required, for instance, to purchase a SIM card.

Fields included in a Voter ID card:

A Voter ID card is an efficient and widely accepted form of personal identification in India. Not only does it facilitate one to cast their vote during an election but also acts as an identity proof and address proof for a variety of purposes. This voter card is issued by the Election Commission of India to all eligible Voters and comprises the following fields:

• A hologram sticker.
• Serial number.
• Photograph of the cardholder.
• Name of elector or voter cardholder.
• Card holder’s parent’s Name.
• Card holder’s gender.
• Elector’s or voter card holder’s age as on the date of issue of the card.

Elector’s or card holder’s complete residential address is provided on the rear side of the voter card, along with the signature of the issuing authority.
