INTRODUCTION:

 

Hooghly is one of the districts of West Bengal in India. The district is named after the Hooghly river. Hooghly is a very economically developed district of West Bengal and it concentrates mainly on jute cultivation, jute industry and jute trade. Sreerampur, Champdani, Bhadreshwar and Tribeni consists of numerous jute mills along the banks of the Hooghly river. The Hindustan Motors plant in Uttarpara is one of the largest car manufacturing plants in India and there are many other industrial complexes. There are some thermal power plants like Bandel and Tribeni which are running smoothly. There are various types of mineral resources which are quite rich in Hooghly. Agriculture and industry are running very well in Hooghly. Hooghly’s soil is fertile and ideal for agriculture. This area has got the alluvial type of soil. Some good facilities for industrial development have been recently discovered in this district. If the development can be used correctly and wisely then it will be a very good sign of our national economy which will help further to maintain the regional balance of the state.

1. Agriculture

Most of the population depends on agriculture. There are varieties of crops produced here. The major crop is paddy which covers most of the cultivated area of the district. Jute, oilseeds, wheat, rice, potato, pulses and vegetables are also other major crops grown here.

 

2. Food Processing

To upgrade the rural economy food processing is beginning to play an important role and is gradually becoming one of the major industries of this district. To make food products long-lasting and more reliable raw agricultural, horticultural and animal products are simply used and are transformed into market-oriented products to maintain the safety of the health of the civilians. This area has a fertile landscape and favourable climatic conditions which can greatly help to increase the food-producing industry in the near future.

 

3. Transport

Transport plays a very important role in economic development. The major means of transport in this district are waterways, railways and roads. The railway communication is very effective in the district and especially railway communication in all the outskirts of the city is extremely developed. Bandel is the railway headquarter of the district. Bandel, Kamarkundu, Dankuni and Seoraphuli are the main four junctions here.

 

4. Power Resource

Power is a very important source of energy used in our daily lives. It is used in almost everything including watching television, washing clothes, heating and lighting the homes, taking a shower, working from home on your laptop or computer, running appliances and cooking. Hooghly district occupies a very strong position in power generation. It produces a large scale of electricity and plays a vital role in the district. Bandel thermal power station and Vikdas thermal power stations provide most of the power supply to all the industries of the district and are considered as boons for the entire area in Hooghly.

 

5. Education

Education plays an important role in human development and increasing the literacy rate of the population. It can be used in the economic development of the area which further helps in the development of the resources. A 2011 census records that over 80% of the population are very literate which was a larger literacy rate than West Bengal.  Education has been spread in different blocks of the district as well as on the outskirts of the district. Many primary schools, middle schools and high schools have been constructed in these recent years.

 

6. Health Services

Health is considered the most vital wealth of all human beings. Good health increases the state of physical and mental well being which is further necessary for a meaningful, productive and pleasant life. The two main areas for human resource development are health and nutrition. This district has six Sadar hospitals, one sixty-two sub-health centres,  sixty primary health centres and eighty-nine diagnostic centres.

 

7. Banking Services

Banks provide a safe place for storing extra cash and credit. Banks offer checking accounts, certificates of deposit, savings account, current account etc. This district provides all types of banking services like business loans, checking accounts, saving accounts, debit and credit cards, merchant services which include credit card processing, reconciliation and reporting, check collection and treasury services like payroll and deposit services. Most of the population in Hooghly district works in commercial and Gramin banks.

 

8. Water Resources

Human life is useless without water. In this Hooghly, district water is mainly used for irrigation, industrial and domestic purposes. Irrigation stands first in this district and is used to irrigate about two hundred nine thousand hectares of the cropped area. The main sources of irrigation are canals by which water is pulled and received, and the second is tanks.

 

9. Forest Resources

One of the main renewable resources is forest. Tropical rain forests are found here. Reserved forests have occupied seventy per cent of the total area of the district. A rich variety of teak species are found in this forest area as well as Mennjiri, Arjun, Bamboo, Akashmoni, etc.

 

10. Land and Livestock resources

Soil is the most important resource of Earth. The soil is very fertile in this district and because of this development agriculture practice is increasing day by day. The soils of this district are mainly three types, i.e., clayey soil, clayey loam soil and loamy soil.

 

• Clayey soil covers around twenty-nine per cent of the total area of the district.
• Clayey loam soil is generally found in the eastern part of the district and covers almost thirty-six per cent of the area.
• Loamy soil is situated in the eastern and western part of the district and is very fertile.

 

11. Industrial Development

Another important part of resource development is human resource. Agro-based industries are very famous in Hooghly and there a large scale of industries found in this district. Different types of industries of this district are local demand based industries, chemical industries, agro-based industries, forest-based industries and livestock-based industries. Along with this many micros and small industrial units have developed in these recent years and have employed over forty thousand peoples of this district. Another vital factor of industrial development is infrastructural facilities like nearby markets, availability of suitable workforce, road connectivity and water and electricity supply. Hooghly has met all these requirements and has become one of the most industrially developed districts in West Bengal.

 

12. Jute industry

This industry mainly concentrates on jute cultivation, jute industry and jute trade. The first jute mill had been constructed in this very region. Recently in this area, there are 60 jute mills. It has been noticed that many jute industries are located in Hooghly. The main factors responsible are the proximity of jute producing areas. Hooghly is located in such a way that all the jute industries are grown around here. The next factor is inexpensive water transport. Because of cheaper water transport, this transport is highly saved and this highly saved amount is invested smoothly in jute production.

 

13. Tourism

Hooghly is a very interesting place for tourists to visit. There are many tourists attractions scattered all over the district. The main tourist's attractions are:-

 

• Hangseshwari Temple- Within the temple you can find an amazing terracotta structure and inside it consists of another temple named Basudeva.
• Tarakeshwar Temple- It is one of the best temples in Hooghly. It has a presiding deity named “ Lord Tarakeshwar” and to visit this temple thousands of devotees from all over India visits this temple to offer their prayers to the almighty Lord.
• Hooghly Imambara- There are different views of the Imambara. One can take a view from the rooftops and the other from the clock tower. Both views are amazing and worth watching.
• Besides this, there are also other attractions like bandel city, shrine basilica, antpur Ramakrishna math, chandannagar museum, chinsurah dutch cemetery, antpur radhagovindji temple, etc.

 

14. Plant Nursery

Established in 1982 and situated in Serampore, Hooghly district, Sankar nursery is a very well reputed and international nursery. This nursery has unlimited stock of nursery plants and these are mainly used for supplying, exporting, distributing and cultivating their nursery plants. This nursery is trying nowadays to develop their business more and more. Besides this Khajababa nursery is also very well known for plants, fruits, flower and wood plant nursery in Dhaniakhali, Hooghly.

 

• Pandua nursery which is established in 1994 has been listed in the top for service providers of plant, flowers and dried flowers in India.

 

15.  Khadi and village industries   

There are many village industries that flourished in this district. They are mainly based on local demand, traditional silks and local raw materials. To meet the local demands productions are supplied to Kolkata and other parts of the country. These khadi and village industries produce jute bags, mat making, spices, tailoring, pushed rice, toy making, blacksmiths, carpentry, pottery, etc. Along with this in all blocks of the district, many repairing and servicing units are running.
