Introduction

Breastfeeding and a person's milk diet have a key role in preventing life-threatening infections in infants during the COVID-19 pandemic thus reducing the strain on the health system. Considering that, India features a high new-born death rate and a 3rd of all preterm births, within the world, ensuring adequate availability of breastmilk becomes even more pertinent. Of the 25 million births, nearly 43% (11 Million) aren't breastfed within the primary hour and nearly 30-50% preterm/sick babies in neonatal medical care units (NICU) in India lack access to breastmilk.

The Hon'ble Chief Minister Ms. Mamata Banerjee launched Eastern India's first and country's most modernized "Human Milk Bank" in SSKM Hospital in August 2013. it's equipped with pasteurization and most advanced milk collection, screening, processing, testing and storage facilities. The project is known as "Madhur Sneha" Babies who are prematurely born, or are of very low birth weight or those babies whose mothers are unable to feed directly are often recipients of banked milk from "Madhur Sneha".
